About

Daily Hem is an independent journal about the unglamorous work of getting better. Focus, habits, training, and the foundations underneath them — one considered story at a time, and one considered letter every Sunday.

A hem is the part of a garment nobody admires. It is the finishing at the edge, sewn on the inside, and it is the only reason the whole thing does not gradually come apart. That struck us as the right name for what we write about. Almost nothing that improves a life is interesting to look at while it is happening.

We started the journal with a specific irritation. Self-improvement writing had become a genre of promises — the morning routine that changes everything, the one habit, the protocol. Very little of it survives contact with a bad February. We wanted the other thing: writing that assumes you are tired, that expects the plan to break, and that is honest about how small the reliable levers actually are.

What we cover

Focus — attention, presence, boredom, and the real cost of being permanently interruptible. Habits — environment, workflow, and the machinery that keeps running when motivation does not. Training — consistency, difficulty, and showing up in the weeks nobody writes about. Wellbeing — sleep, bodies, money, and the people you would call at 2 a.m.

How we work

We do not invent evidence. Where we cite research we say what it does and does not show, and where something is opinion rather than evidence we say so instead of dressing it as science. This genre has a serious problem with confidently-stated numbers that trace back to nothing, and we would rather be less quotable.

We are also not qualified to be your doctor, therapist, or financial adviser, and we will keep saying so in the pieces where it matters. Sleep, mental health, training and money all have points past which an essay is the wrong instrument.

Daily Hem earns money two ways, and we would rather you heard it from us. Some links to retailers are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We also carry display advertising. Neither buys coverage. No brand sees a piece before it runs, no commission changes a verdict, and we will keep publishing criticism of things we link to — including in the same article. Where a story carries affiliate links, it says so at the top.

We accept no gifted product. Photography is licensed via Pexels and credited to the photographer wherever we can identify them. Some diagrams and illustrations are AI-generated, and where they are, the caption says so. We do not use synthetic imagery to depict real people, places, or events, and we will not present an illustration as a photograph. When we recommend something, the reason is in the sentence.

Everything here is published under a single masthead rather than a roster of bylines. We would rather run one honest name than invent several. Thanks for reading.
